Many students
work while they are in high school. For some it is out of necessity, either to help support the family or to pay for expenses such as a car. For others, it may be a summer job or internship to make a little extra money for the coming school year. Whether you are working every day or just on weekends, many colleges like to know if you have any work experience. Having a job shows responsibility and time management skills, two qualities that are essential if you want to succeed as a student at a higher level. It is helpful to keep a record of your employment history so that you are prepared to provide this information when it is requested, whether it be on a college application, job application, or for your own personal resumé.
Note:
You should not be worried
if working only allows you to participate in a few extra-curricular activities rather than many. Colleges understand the time commitment that is involved in having a job, and will consider your extra-curricular involvement accordingly. Try being really committed to three or four clubs, groups, or teams, and balance the rest of your time between work, school, and recreation.
